Upon his return to Philadelphia, where he lived until 1970 when he moved to Staten Island, he continued an active interest in Swedish history in the United States.īesides writing a number of books on the subject, Professor Johnson founded the Swedish Colonial Society and the American Swedish Historical Foundation in Philadelphia. From 1922 to 1924, he spent two years as director of the university's Educational West African Expedition, collecting ethnological data and writing two books on African dialects.
